Debate Club autumn term report

Report By A-Level Student, Enxhi

Debate club is an interesting, yet at the same time challenging, club. We find that, sometimes, despite having a clear, strong opinion about a certain issue, by the end of a debate, our views have changed.

With the help of our moderator, Mr Luis, we always choose to discuss topics concerning contemporary issues. This helps to deepen our knowledge about current events, and teaches us how to apply a critical way of thinking to everyday society.

Our last topic was discussing whether the criminal justice system should focus more on rehabilitation or retribution. This resulted in a lively debate with very strong points from both sides. It made all of us, regardless of our political views, understand the benefits and disadvantages of both of these processes. The debate began with an introduction to the prison system by one of our teachers, Mr Eamonn, who has previously worked for the prison service. He explained how some prisons teach prisoners without literacy skills how to read and write, and how this then influences their lives once they are released. There were some compelling counter arguments such as the re-conviction rate being so high.
