Academic Summer School 2019

Academic Summer School 2019

This year’s Academic Summer School at Chelsea Independent College has been truly one of a kind. During the 6 weeks, each and every student had the chance to experience an eventful, energy-packed journey full of cultural and academic activities during which they had the opportunity to challenge and develop themselves academically, mentally and socially.

The most unique aspect of this academic programme is that students are provided with the opportunity to study a pathway alongside Academic English lessons. This gives our students the opportunity to experience more than a taster session of a subject they have a vast interest in. The equal distribution of English and pathway lessons allows them to not only improve their English proficiency, but also engage in subjects they are passionate about. We ensure that subjects are kept relevant with the current affairs and climates, such as Brexit, AI, Contemporary Art, or robotics in surgery. In addition, we welcome special guest from various corporations to provide workshops and sessions that would encourage team building, or to advise on university application process and future career steps. All students attended critical thinking and public speaking workshops, as well as a UCAS application advice session. The purpose of these workshops is to enhance students’ observational, verbal and analytical skills, as well as to raise self-confidence and self-assurance, so they can assertively voice their opinions and communicate with other people in a confident manner. For the Medicals Students, First Aid training is provided by the St. John’s Ambulance Charity with the purpose of providing the students with a clear understanding of the general first aid, and also teaching them a very valuable, life-saving skill that will benefit them and their communities.

Outside the classroom, students experience carefully selected programme, from award winning west-end plays, such as Aladdin, Wicked and School of Rock, skill-building activities at Earl’s Court youth club, to demonstrating their musical talents during karaoke nights. Of course, they do not miss out on exploring the best London areas and attractions. Wednesdays are dedicated to subject-specific excursions; A chance to leave the classroom and step outside to experience relevant professional workplaces related to their pathways.  A chance to leave the classroom and step outside to experience relevant professional workplaces related to their pathways.
